3G (3e génération) est le sigle caractérisant la téléphonie mobile de 3e génération (téléphonie 3G). Si la 3G est lancée dès octobre 2001 par l’opérateur japonais NTT DoCoMo, elle ne se développe que courant 2004 dans le reste du monde. La téléphonie 3G permet une vitesse de transmission de données débutant à 384 Kbps (kilobits par seconde), qui devrait être suivie d’une version optimisée 3G+ offrant un débit de 3 Mbps (mégabits par seconde). La téléphonie 3G permet par exemple de surfer sur le web tout en parlant au téléphone. Elle permet aussi de converser en visiophonie ou bien de télécharger des fichiers de musique ou des vidéos. Plusieurs prototypes d’appareils sont présentés en 2003 par les géants du marché (Alcatel, Motorola, Nokia, Sony Ericsson, etc.). Les principaux standards de transmission utilisés sont le standard 3GSM (contraction de 3G et GSM: global system for mobile telecommunications) et le standard UMTS (universal mobile telecommunications system).
